چکیده

The 7 Amendment to the EU Cosmetics Directive has made developing non-animal approaches to assure the safety of consumer products a key business need to support future innovation. A substantial research programme was initiated by Unilever in 2004, aimed at critically evaluating the feasibility of a proposed new conceptual approach. The key aspects of this approach are: 1. Developing new risk assessment approaches 2. Developing new computer-based (in silico) and biological (in vitro) models 3. Evaluating the applicability of new data-rich technologies for generating and interpreting information for risk-based safety assessment. We have focussed initially on skin allergy (sensitisation). A new risk assessment framework has been defined and is under evaluation. In collaboration with Entelos Inc., we have developed an in silico model of the induction of skin sensitisation, to help guide our development of new in vitro assays and to provide the biological context for integrating different types of data. New in vitro models are being developed inhouse and through various research partnerships, including via COLIPA and as part of the EU Framework 6 Programme multi-partner research project, Sens-it-iv. The applicability and integration of data from 'omics' technologies are being investigated, including the use of Cytoscape for constructing, visualising and interrogating biological networks in a collaboration with the University of California San Diego. Work is ongoing to evaluate the applicability of this new risk-based approach for skin allergy, and investment is being made in applying the approach to other consumer safety endpoints.

Assuring safety without animal testing: Unilever's ongoing research programme to deliver novel ways to assure consumer safety.

Assuring consumer safety without the generation of new animal data is currently a considerable challenge. However, through the application of new technologies and the further development of risk-based approaches for safety assessment, we remain confident it is ultimately achievable. For many complex, multi-organ consumer safety endpoints, the development, evaluation and application of new, non-...

Assessment and Monitoring for Railway Tracks Reliability and Safety using Nondestructive Testing Measurement Systems

The deterioration of railway tracks raises great concerns about the integrity of assessments and evaluations of railway tracks currently in service. Integrated inspection strategies coupled with innovations in inspection technology can lead to significant improvements in operational cost efficiency and reliability without the requirement of a fundamental shift in the existing understanding o...

Skin Sensitization: Modeling the Human Adverse Response

Unilever initiated a long-term research and capability development program in 2004 to evaluate and implement a new conceptual approach for assuring consumer safety without animal testing (Fentem et al., 2004, Westmoreland et al., 2010). Unilever’s approach for safety assessment is risk-based, meaning that all available data on a new ingredient (including predicted levels of consumer exposure du...

Short-term safety and risk evaluation of engine oil enriched by high concentrations copper nanoparticles on the skin

Abstract Objective(s): Copper nano particles are added to ordinary engine oil as an additive to reduce friction and repair damaged surface under friction conditions. However, it is still unclear what environmental effects such a compound might have on conventional engine oils and its toxicity in different animal species has not been determined. The aim of this study is to investigate the ...

A Safety-II Perspective on Organisational Learning in Healthcare Organisations; Comment on “False Dawns and New Horizons in Patient Safety Research and Practice”

In their recent editorial Mannion and Braithwaite provide an insightful critique of traditional patient safety improvement efforts, and offer a powerful alternative vision based on Safety-II thinking that has the potential to radically transform the way we approach patient safety. In this commentary, I explore how the Safety-II perspective points to new directions for organisational learning in...
